Gig review Great Reckoning, The Savage Jaw and La Bête Blooms at The Eagle Inn, Salford

On Thursday the 9th of October 2014 I attended a gig at The Eagle Inn in Salford. First time I have attended a gig here, and I was very impressed. To say the set up in the Eagle Inn is a little different, is an understatement.

At first glance from the outside the pub just looks like the usual old pub but once you step through to where the gigs are held, it is very different.

A hidden gem of a traditional back street boozer and commonly known to the locals as the Lamp Oil. There are three small rooms off a central corridor, with a central bar serving Holt's Bitter. It is a Grade II listed building dating from 1902. There is a fine terracotta plaque of an eagle with the name above the door, and for years this was the only pub sign. Noted as having been the last beer only house in the area. The attached cottage next door has been converted into a live music venue that opened in October 2013. The pub is situated on Collier Street in Salford. Although it is in Salford, it is a mere 5 minutes walk from Deansgate, Manchester so well worth a visit if you are in town.

The pub is owned by Rupert Hill, Johnny Booth and Esther Maylor. Rupert and Johnny have rescued a number of  pubs locally in around Manchester and this piece in the Manchester Evening News, tell you a little more.

They are not strangers to gigs themselves, as they are all in a band called Biederbeck. You can find them on Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud, and Youtube The band members are Rupert Hill, Jonny Booth, James Smith, Andrew Seddon, Esther Maylor, Simmy Singh, and Michael Mckeown. Rupert is the lead singer with the band.

The acoustics in the cottage are fantastic, although it is a strange sight to behold too. The upper floors,( for the most part,) have been removed and a stage installed in the downstairs section, but it works extremely well. A very cosy venue.

   The Savage Jaw

First up was The Savage Jaw an experimental electronic artist from Preston in the  North-West of England. Who provided some unusual yet interesting music. You can find him on Facebook, Twitter YouTube, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. He describes his genre of music as Ambient Noise Pop, which sort of sums it up to a tee!

    La Bête Blooms

Next up were  La Bête Blooms, founded on 10 July 2010. They describe their genre as Post-Punk, their base is between Hull and London. Diverse lot at this gig, but all the better for that I believe.

This is a five piece band and they are Daniel Mawer - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar, John Copley providing Vocals/Lead Guitar, Jack Gallagher -Bass, Vocals/Lead Guitar, Louisa Robinson on Keyboard, and last but not least James Coggin on Drums. Their home town is Hull and their record label is The Adult Teeth Recording Company. Their latest video Everyday's The Same is was released on the 10th November 2014.

A very catchy number , so come on and take a listen. You can find the band on Facebook, Twitter  Soundcloud and Youtube.

The band are appearing next at The Polar Bear, Kingston-upon-Hull on Tuesday the 16th of December 2014, and in the new year at The New Adelphi Club, Hull on Friday 9th January 2015

Great Reckoning

And the main attraction and headliners at this gig were Great Reckoning, a Manchester band from Tyldesley. Their line up is Josh Glen - Lead vocals,, Matty Lyon - Rhythm Guitar, Andrew Pendlebury - Lead guitar, Laiton Price - Bass Guitar and finally Jordan Lawley on the drums.

An alternative Rock/ Indie band. another five piece band who recently won a Battle of the Bands at the Band on the Wall in Manchester, in support of the Prince's Trust. Local band from Astley,Tyldesley area, they have been together since Feb 2013 and write/play their own songs.

They have also recently been  in the studio and recorded two tracks - Finally, and Bleed for your Life. They are trying to go down the writing/playing their own stuff but may throw in the odd cover track here and there. Recently been played on Real XS - 'Future Classics'

You can find them on Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, and Youtube

The next gig from the band is between Christmas and New Year and will be at the Retro Bar Manchester. The gig starts at 7.30 pm

Please follow, and go and watch all these guys in action. Live music is the best sort of music there is.

Love n stuff
